Majory Darcy awoke on the day of her wedding excited and optimistic. But also tired and little hungover. She’d glance over at the empty side of the bed and sighed. After tonight that side would hardly remain empty. She smiled, stretched and got herself ready for breakfast. It was the final breakfast of the massive wedding, this one was more of a private gathering, the bride’s family and bridal party were the only ones allowed to attend.
Mar had spent time with her girls, as well as interacting with her god father and his wife. Their daughter another friend of Mar’s must’ve slept in after partying as hard as they all had been. And Mar couldn’t blame her. She knew her friend was relieved her younger brother wasn’t coming.
Eventually Majory would make her exit from dining area to get dressed for the pre-game. The pre-game involving drinks, snacks, mani/pedis, wedding makeup and finally putting on the dress.
She was the first one to the room everyone else apparently sluggish or were still eating. Some not eating at all but still to hung over to move.
It was approaching noon, it would be time to hustle if they were to get it all done before the deadline. There was a knock at the door and she would go to answer it without hesitation. A broad smile would cross her lips as an old but familiar face would greet her on the other side. ‘Lissa!’ she’d cry and throw her skinny around around her younger friends neck hugging her ‘little sister’ tightly for a fully moment.
‘I’m so glad you’re here. I was worried with Erick not coming you might bale too…But I forgot there was no way you’re mother was going stag if uncle Dickey was walking me down the aisle.’
She pause releasing mel long enough to hold her at arms length and looking her over a wide smile touching her lips.
‘Damn girl, you got hot since we were kids.’ she’d press a warm kiss to her cheek before taking her hand and dragging her into the suite.
Down the hall the elevator dinged and the sound of a gaggle of girls could be heard. Clearly the rest of the party had arrived. Mar’s would flip the dead bolt on the door leaving it open for everyone. She’d smile at Mel. ‘Get ready its the old crew’ She’d smile knowing Mel would probably remember most of them.
She’d hand her friend a mimosa filled flute. As the door opened and female squeals could be heard as the door opened and a gaggle of 20 somethings piled into the room all excited for the days events.
‘Omg is that Lissa?’ ‘Holy shit. Hey girl!’ and other forms of greetings were tossed in Melissa’s direction.

Mel groaned as her alarm went off. She had been cutting back on her drinking since starting to date Landyn but the last couple of days she let her old self loose. The time on her phone told her she already missed the brunch. Mar wouldn't care but Mel knew she would never hear the end of it from Martha. She rolled onto her back and rubbed her hands over her eyes as she attempted to come to life. She sighed as she got up and showered. She slipped into a pair of yoga pants and a button down shirt. It'd be easier after her hair was done. The dress she planned on wearing was in a garment bag.
It wouldn't take her long to make her way to where all the girls were getting ready. Mel wasn't in the wedding but Mar had invited her to be part of the festivities which made her feel special. At least Mar and Tilly still loved her. Pen and Mel never really were able to find any common ground. She’d overheard someone mention the first night that Erick wouldn't be attending. That fact was both relief and a disappointment. But it also made her angry for Mar. What kind of douche nugget didn't attend his own sister's wedding?
She pulled herself together before knocking on the door. Mel grinned and wrapped her arms around Mar tightly. It was so good to see her in real life. Her stomach knotted when Mar mentioned Erick but she gave her "big sister" a smile.
"I would not have missed this for the world. I'm a little insulted you even considered that possibility. And you're right. Martha would not have let me miss it even if I didn't want to be here."
She squeezed Mar before she let her go. She would grin at her. Her cheeks flushed a bit at the compliment. She found herself being pulled into the room and just laughed a bit. Meanwhile, she was mentally bracing herself for the oncoming onslaught that the elevator dinge announced. She hadn’t seen everyone in a few years and was actually pretty excited to see them all. She gratefully took the flute from Mar taking a sip and sat it down briefly sonit didn't spill as she greeted everyone.
Once she was done with greetings she'd settle down into a chair. A happy smile formed. She was far from the awkward new girl she had been when she met everyone. She took another sip of her mimosa. She'd chat with the girls and catch up. Some married, some with kids, some engaged. She was happy her friends were happy. She finished her first mimosa and would stand up to get another one. She turned to the bride with a grin.
"Mmmmm, Mar, whatever you need I've got you today. Since I'm not actually in the wedding party you can consider me your go-fer."
She was more than happy to do what she could to ensure her friend had the best day.

Mars enjoyed the attention flourished on her, as she sat with her veil on her head everyone talking and gossiping and drinking mimmosas. It took her a moment to relalize that someone was missing. Her Maid of Honor. 'Has anyone seen Ashley?' She'd asked suddenly, and the girls would go quiet, looking around then finally a mummbled no and someone offered with no help 'she might still be sleeping...' Mars would shake her head.
'That stupid bitch.' She'd frown and fold her lips in taking her phone out and calling her friend. But there was no answer. 20 calls later there was still no answer and Mars was starting to feel like she might be sick.
'She's not answering.' she'd say her voice strained as she tried to hold herself in check. She'd start to pace around the room gripping her phone tightly. Stress creasing her face. She'd turn to Mel. 'Can...you please run down to ashleys room and just make sure that dumb bitch is just hungover and passed out...I don't know what I'm going to do....' She took a deep breath. 'Please Lissa. I really need this favor..' She'd wait for Mel for ask for her room number and then she'd excuse herself to the bathroom which she'd lock herself in until Mel's return.

"On it."
Mel started standing before Mar had even finished saying please. She downed the remainder of her mimosa. Her brows furrowed as Mar moved into the bathroom and locked herself in. A determined look formed. Mel looked at one of the girls.
"Lyla, keep trying to get a hold of Ashley. Mar will probably still be trying but maybe an additional perrson annoying the fuck out of her will get a response. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Lyla nodded and Mel left. She'd find Ashley's room and knock on the door. "Ashley." No response. Mel knocked louder. "Ashley!" The third attempt would be Mel pounding on the door. "ASHLEY!"
One of their other friends would be wandering by and give her a look. Was that?
"Lissa?"
Mel would rush past on her way to the elevator.
"Not now, Geoff."
Mel reached the front desk and made her way up. She used all her charm and made the story out to sound more desperate than it probably actually was to get a spare key to Ashley's room.
"Thank you so much."
She offered a sweet smile before taking off again. She made it back to Ashley's room and knocked one more time before letting herself in.
"Fuck.."
Mel breathed under her breath when Ashley was no where to be found. Her things were still there. Empty bottles littered the floor. Clearly, Ashley had her own after after party. Mel left and headed back to the rest of the girls.
She knocked on the bathroom door and shut behind her when Mar let her in. Mar was talking to someone and Mel could only assume it was Ashley by the way she was talking.

Mar stood infront of the mirror after she locked herself in the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. She looked like a ghost. She was pale and stressed. This wedding was starting to feel cursed. First Erick couldn’t make it, thank God Uncle Dickey was there like he had been her whole life. But now Ashley was missing. She was going to kill someone. Angry tears pricked at her eyes. This wasn’t fair.
Her hands would grip the edges of the sink as tears began to drip out of her eyes. She was trying to hold it together and not cry. Puffy eyes wouldn’t do when it came to getting her makeup.
She’d try calling Ashley again. And Again and Again. She was getting more and more stressed and Angry by the moment. There was a knock at the door and she shouted at them to go away.
Her phone finally buzzed and it was Ashley. ‘You stupid bitch.’ Mars would hiss into the phone as a groggy still drunk sounding Ashley answered the phone. ‘Where the fuck are you?’
There was another knock on the door and against she shouted at them to go away but this time it was Mel. She’d unlock the door letting Mel let herself in as she continued to talk to Ashley.
‘What the fuck do you mean your in the hospital? What the absolute fuck?’ Exasperation would cross mars face as angry tears began to bubble over. It wasn’t just ashley. It was her dad, erik and the whole mess with Penelope all crashing in around her.
‘Its my fucking wedding day. How could you be so fucking reckless? I trusted you. Fuck you. Go back to rehab you stupid alchohoic bitch!’
With that she’d stab end on her phone and chuck it at the wall with a frustrated scream not caring if it broke or not.
‘FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!’ she’d scream before collapsing to the floor her face in her hands as she started to cry. ‘My wedding is cursed.’

Mel would watch silently as Mar finished her. It was easy for Mel to tell that Mar was getting overwhelmed before she threw the phone and screamed. She'd silently walk over and pick up the phone before walking over to Mar. Mel would sit down next to her and wrap her arms around Mar. Hugging her friend to her.
"It's not cursed. I promise. Ashley's always been irresponsible. It fucking sucks she couldn't get herself together for one day…"
She bit her bottom lip. She really didn't want to ask the next question but maybe talking through it would help Mar.
"What was Erick's excuse for not coming anyway? That douche nugget should be here for you on your big day. Do you want me to punch him if I ever see him again? It'd sure as hell make me feel better."
She was only half joking. She stroked Mar's hair gently as she sat with her.
"What can I do to help? This is your day and it should be magical."

Majory tried to catch her breath and breathe evenly again as Mel tried to comfort her. She would just nod blindly going along with whatever Mel said until she brought up her brother. ‘Ew no. Why would you say such a horrible thing?’ Majory would pull away from Mel, not sure if her friend was joking or serious towards her accusation of her younger brother. ‘He’s beyond devastated he cannot be here…He hasn’t been home since…..’ She’d pause letting it drift off it was indicative of Their father’s death, but it could’ve spoke of something else entirely. Majory’s face was full of pity as she lookedat Mel then. ‘You don’t know do you’ She’d say. Pity in her voice. As there was clearly something that Mel didn’t know about. It was going unspoken would clearly stay that way. Thats how it was with the Darcy’s. They closed ranks and there was no openings. She’d sigh a heavy sigh and wipe away at her tears. She’d lick her lower lips. ‘What happened to the two of you Lissa? You two were so good together…He never ever loved anyone like he loved you.’ There was a deep sadness in her voice as she looked at her friend. ‘What did he do to hurt you so badly? Do you know if he knew you were coming he’d probably move heaven and earth just to be here because of you. Not me. You. I Just. Wow. I just always thought you two were end game…unlike me and James..’
She’d rubb her her eyes with the heels of her hands and sniffle a little bit. ‘God I wish Erick was here. I always feel like he knew what to do. And mom just put so much on him when dead died. You’d think He was some 30 year old man going through the basics the way mom was treating him. Expecting to be her rock and see things her way and make sure the empire didn’t fall.’ She shook her head. ‘He was so strong. I don’t know how he did it for as long as he did before…’ she’d trail off again and close her mouth once more closing darcy ranks. She’d sigh and open her eyes and look at Mel dead seriously.
‘Do you have any alchohol on you? I feel llke I could drown a whole bar right now, and I don’t want to deal with them’ she pointed to the door a shake of her head and her veil would suddenly fall off. She’d forgotten she’d tried it on. It was obvious how many knots this wedding had her in.

Mel watched Mar’s expression change when she asked about Erick. Did she really want to get into this now? There was a wedding happening today and Mar still had a maid of honor issue to resolve. The look on Mar’s face would indicate that she did, in fact, want to do this right now as she continued on. Mel would meet Mar’s eyes. She didn’t like that Mar was showing pity for some unknown reason.
“Know what, Mar? And don’t pull that Darcy closed ranks shit. You cannot say something like that and not tell me…”
Her heart started to race. Had something happened? Was something wrong? Had there been some type of horrible accident that no one had bothered to tell her about? Her mind raced back through conversations over the years between Martha and Richard that she had overheard. She couldn’t recall any mention or even indication of what was going on with the Darcy’s, especially Erick.
Mel would let Mar go and slump back a bit when she asked what happened. It was a good question and one Mel didn’t have an answer to herself. She looked down to the floor then back up to Mar. She was fighting back her own tears. Her mouth and lips felt dry. Why did she have to open this can of worms. She licked her lips.
“I don’t know. The calls, texts, letters…they stopped coming one day. It’d been a slow progression. It sounded like things were getting progressively worse but he wouldn’t tell me what was going on. And to this day I haven’t had any closure.”
Her eyes narrowed a bit but she didn’t look at Mar. She stood up and started pacing. It was what she did when she got upset or angry. It was a way for her to try and expend energy so the feelings didn’t just eat her alive.
“He abandoned me Mar and I don’t even know why…”
She bit her bottom lip. A quiet tone to her voice.
“I doubt he’d be here just for me. If he was going to be here for anyone it would be you. I was never good enough for him.”
Her pacing would stop and she would look at Mar. There was clear confusion on her face but she was happy to switch the focus from her.
“You are marrying James and you don’t think you two are end game?”
Mel would look at Mar curiously when her voice trailed off.
“Before what?”
Mel nodded when Mar asked if she had any alcohol on her. She needed some herself.
“Of course I do.” She’d pull a flask from her purse and hand it to Mar. “Bride first.” Mel picked up the veil carefully so it wouldn’t get ruined. She switched gears and shoved down the emotions talking about Erick had brought up.
“You have a maid of honor issue to solve. Maybe Tilly can step in?”

Majory would wait for Mel to finish her tirade about her brother silent as a statue. She waited until Mel was done. It was clear how much Erick had unintentionally hurt her. Finally she spoke. ‘Legally I cannot tell you a thing Lissa. We all had to sign an NDA. And you weren’t the only one he Abandoned. He abandoned us all. Losing Dad just broke him.
She’d sigh as mel had brought up how she didn’t think her and james weren’t end game. ‘No I know we are, but not like you and Erick. You two had fairy tale magic.’ She gave a wistful smile. ‘I wish he could be here to see you.’ She had ignored some of what mel had said partially from selective hearing and partially her distraction. She’d take the flash and take a healthy drink as Mel brought her back to her current issue. She had no maid of honor. ‘Tilly can’t wear the dress…shes ugh..too curvy.’ she’d emphasis her boobs when she was refering to curvy and giggle. It was hard to imagine her baby sister finally growing boobs.
Majory would hog the flask and take another sip not bothering to give it back sizing mel up and down. ‘But you might it it….are you willing to try?’

Mel sighed as she checked herself out on the mirror. She wasn't surprised everyone had to sign NDAs. But what the fuck happened? Mel was more worried a out Erick than she probably should be at this point. Especially considering that she just started dating Landyn. But Mar was right that Mel and Erick had fairytale magic.
And it was a large part of why Mel never dated anyone seriously and spent nights drinking. It was easier to forget that she had that kind of romance that people dream about. Plus she had decided she never wanted to get attached to anyone in that way again. A sad smile formed when Mar said she wished he could be here to see Mel. Part of her wished he was too but the other part was thankful he wasn't here. What if the magic had disappeared? She didn't want those memories ruined. She shook her head a bit before turning back to look at Mar.
A giggle escaped when Mar said why Tilly couldn't be maid of honor and the hand gestures emphasizing waht she was talking about. It was hard to imagine Tilly being grown up-ish. Then Mar suggested Mel try the dress. She raised a brow.
"Only because you're asking me. I love you dearly and want your day to be perfect. Is the dress in Ashley's room?"

‘You’ll look amazing I promise. And if I’d known you since 2nd grade the job would’ve been yours already’ she teased. She sighed ‘yeah its in that dirty whores room.’ she pouted and took another swig before handing it back half empty.
‘Fuck it. Lets go before the other girls get jealous and whiney. Its not like any of their fat asses can fit into the dress.’ it wasn’t that anyone was obesse but Mars was in a foul mood. She put her veil down on the sink’s counter and stood up looking at herself in the mirror.
She wasn’t wearing makeup yet so there was nothing smeared. Just a redness to her nose and puffy eyes. ‘Ok we can do this.’
She’d open the door to clamour of the other girls already getting tipsy on the unlimited mimosas.
‘We’ll be right back.’
Was all she’d say not that they cared they were having the time of their lives on a free ride. She’d walk with mel to ashley’s trashed room.
‘To think she never grew out of being called smashley.’ she shook her head looking around finally spotting the dress and shoes still in the dressing bag. She’d pick it and the shoes up. ‘I think you guys wear the same size shoe still…’ she’d bite her lower lip. They’d make it work.
‘Do you want to try it on here or with the girls and make them all but puke their mimosas? Since you know at least half of them are penelopes cronies/spies..’

A small laugh escaped as Mar teased.
"Are you feeling guilty you didn't just ask me to be in the wedding party initially?"
Mel teased back and gave her a wink. She'd follow Mar out of the bathroom and through the room. Some of the girls half acknowledged Mar's statement but most just kept chatting and drinking. Once they arrived to Ashley's room, she unlocked the door and walked in with Mar making sure to close the door behind them.
She looked around the room then to Mar as she held up the dress and the shoes.
"I'll just try it on here. Probably a safer bet. Is Pen even allowed to be here today?"
She'd ask as she slipped out of her shirt and pants before slipping the dress on. It fit like a dream. She'd pull the shoes out and try those on as well. It felt a bit like being Cinderella. Everything fit. She'd do a spin for Mar then move to check herself out in the mirror. She smoothed her hands over her stomach. She'd twist to one side than the other.
"Well, it looks like we have a solution to the Maid of Honor situation."
Mel gave her a nervous smile. She knew this was not going to be a small wedding by any means. But Mel would do anything for Mar. If that meant being in the wedding party last minute then she would do it.
"Guess the last step is letting the DJ know the change to the wedding party for when he introduces everyone. Unless you aren't doing that?"

‘Not guilty at all. I know you’d have politely declined. Its not your thing. And I know the only reason you are indulging me right now is because its an emergency.’ She smiled at Mel as they walked into ashley’s trashed room.
Marjory would look around in disgust at all the empty booze bottles around the room, while Mel changed. She turned when her friend had it on. She’d gasp in delight.
‘You look beautiful! You look so much better than Ashley ever could in that dress….’ She smiled. ‘Solution indeed.’ She shook her head about the DJ. ‘Oh no. Non of that archaic shit for me.’ she’d say laughing. And sigh pushing some hair behind her ears.
‘After all the NDA’s I’ve had to sign over the past 5 years thanks to Pen. No. That bitch is absolutely positively not allowed here. She’s banned and security knows not to let her in.’
‘Did Martha tell you the latest scandal she put me through? I can’t tell you all the details NDA obvi. But She tried to pretend to be and sleep with James. And she was almost successful. God I hate her. Like how did I get to be so lucky to be stuck with an identical evil twin?’ She shook her head.
‘Can I see that flask?’ she’d ask not seeing any full bottles in smashleys room. ‘Thank God Anna, is helping me out so much with things…she’s so sweet….she arranged for all the mani pedi’s to be done here and even the hairdresser and makeup artist are coming here…she’s been a godsend.’
She was of course referring to the pastors wife. The venue had been very last minute and luckily available. Someone had some pull. But it was unclear exactly who’d secured the venue after the other had fallen through.

Mel was thankful that Mar knew her so well. While Mel had learned to navigate and operate within Richard's world she still wasn't born and bred into it. Most had accepted Mel which had helped her tremendously, especially in the early years. Her thoughts drifted briefly to her first summer in the Hamptons. Mar's gasp pulled Mel out of her thoughts.
"Thanks."
She'd smile.
"I shouldn't be surprised. You did always like to do things your own way."
Mel would fall silent when Mar started talking about NDAs and Pen. Mel was glad Pen wasn't going to be around today. She disliked her even more after hearing Mar's tale.
"What a bitch. It's amazing how you two turned out so differently."
Mel would take a sip from her flask before handing it to Mar. She'd change back into her yoga pants and shirt before putting the dress and shoes back into the garment bag.
"I'm glad that it's all working out, Mar, really." She grinned. "I still standby that your wedding isn't cursed. We should probably get back to the girls though."
She'd take Mar's hand, garment bag in the other, and leave Ashley's room.

Mars would nod holding onto Mels hand for dear life as they headed back to her hotel suite. When the got there the girls were already quite tipsy and wanting to know what was going on. And Majory would pause as Mel would go hang smashleys garmet bag on the garment rack that held other garment bags with everyones names on them. 'So Smashley got so drunk last night she ended up in the hospital because the groomsman she tried to fuck got scared cuz she puked and passed out on him. Both figuratively and litterally.' She shuddered. The girls all starting shouting questions at once and marjory would wave her arms.
'Be that as it may, my younger sister from another mister is going to take her place in the bridal party. Some of you may remember Lissa from summers in the hamptons...' One of the other girls would speak up one of pens cronies that unfortunately was still invited. 'How come she gets to? Its not like she was even a part of the party to begin with.' she said in a snarky tone.
Marjory's eyes would darken like storm clouds and reflect as much on her face. 'Because Tonya, she can actually fit in the dress unlike you.' She said. 'And if anyone else has a problem say so now so I know who to throw out next.' Jory would cross her arms feeling warmed up from the booze Mel had been feeding her.
'But she doesn't even know the dance!' whined Tonya. refering to the receptions coreographied dance between the groomsman and the bridal party. 'Yes she does.' Majory said with full confidence. She'd turn to Mel.
'Do you remember that first summer at the white party? where we had to learn the waltz but like the catilian style waltz where we had to not just dance with our partners but trade as well? Thats all we're doing, but the groomsman will be wearing black masks and white gloves and randomnly partnered up with a bridesmaid. You do remember the steps right? I mean how could you forget, you had Erick as a teacher. When you guys danced you looked like you were floating the two of you were so graceful together that summer.' She'd smile. 'But really thats all it is. It'll be like riding a bike. Here we can practice the basics if you'd like.' she'd hold out her hands to Mel to practice the waltz in the middle of the wedding suite. But only if Mel wanted to.
