Year 2056. America has remained the dominant superpower of Earth, thanks mostly to its alliances with China and Japan. This trade dominant allegiance has pushed all three countries into a technological boom. This has pushed the differences between middle and upper class citizens in these three countries far apart, the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer. The price of oil has skyrocketed and most vehicles now run on a hybrid system or on a corn based fuel. It has helped the farmers in the Midwest tremendously, however it cannot be produced as easily due to the weather difficulties in that area of the country. But enough of this world. For behind the scenes plays a completely different tune.
Magic is gone. Earth has become a world of mortals. These people cannot even fathom the idea of immortal beings running around amongst them, and so most has left this plane of existence or simply blended into the nightlife. A few still remain however, simply here and there at random intervals. Mostly watching, as it seems their time has completely past.
This began with the leaving of the elves. Elves were the last pure strain of magic to touch the earth, and somewhere in the 1800’s they all left to seek residence elsewhere. Those that elected to stay behind or were left were not of pure strain, and so, eventually, through the breeding with humans, the elfish gene was completely erased. True, there are still some humans on this world that could trace their family tree back to elves and the fae, but that, due to the religious groups that believe in only the one true God, has been wiped from history books.
Most of the religious sect around the world believes that we are in the end of times, and true enough, the world does seem to be pointing in that direction according to the law of God and the stories passed down in his bible. But things will soon circle around back to the beginning, and what the beginning actually is….these mortals, will be unprepared for.
(A brief recount of history, by Lilith McCarrion)
I was the first. The chosen. The hand of fate called in by the Goddess Danü Rèalta when she was to show force. She was also known as Illyana, my mother. My father was not spoken of in many circles. Understandably so. An outcast of heaven, and escapee of hell, only to be left and forgotten about by both, the fact that my highborn and pure mother could have even fallen in love with such a brash creature and even produced my brothers and I was unheard of. This was not the reason Illyana Vryce-Griffinsbane was ejected from the realm of the Tuatha De Dannan however before she met my father. This is another story all together, and one that has little to do with our current situation.
I was the first to be chosen as Ridire by Illyana once she ascended into the Goddess form we know her to be now. I would not be the last, however. Second to be chosen would be Aine Stargazer. A sidhe, and a direct descendant from my mother’s family. She would prove to be the patience and care of Danü Rèalta. The caretaker of children and the watchful eye of the Goddess. Nothing strayed from her gaze. I was rarely seen unless called upon. Aine, was all over the world. The main representative of the order. The high priestess of the Grey Goddess. It was mainly because of her influence that many of the temples were built and maintained. She is good.
There were others inducted into this close nit inner circle. My older brother Charion, once, split, was also inducted. Happy to help mother in any way shape and form. As well as Seraphina De’Asandir. It was hard to induct her to this close group, seeing as she was my own daughter. It took several hundred years before I would allow it, even though I could not avoid it. My daughter is as headstrong as I am, although she reminded me more of her grandmother than anyone else.
There was a total of six for the inner circle, with several other family members becoming actively involved here and there. Illereas Shadowstar, Sunfire Shadowstar, the twins Nathan and Mia Shadowstar, Sheare Vryce-Griffinsbane, my husband Elessar Ancalimon, and many others over the years.
The religion Illyana, the Danü Rèalta, inspired swept the European nation, and yet ended tragically once the Christians invaded, our beliefs being deemed pagan and witchcraft. It would unfortunately cause many deaths, on both sides, before Danü Rèalta gave up. She would not have any more deaths caused by her hands, and with the elves planning their leave of this realm, the goddess graciously retired, remaining close to friends and family and as well as her inner circle somewhere in the middle 1300’s.
Modern times encroached upon us all, magic became all but forgotten besides in books and fairy tales. We all changed, we all grew, and we all adapted to the changing times. After awhile, I no longer saw any of the six. Even my own daughter now had children of her own and kept to herself and her family and I remained with my husband to assist him with his pursuits.
It wasn’t until recently that tragedy would strike my family. My father, Rift, has left. This should not cause alarm for he often takes extended trips, and has been known to be gone for years. But it is as if, he has disappeared completely out of existence. Illyana knows that he lives, but her soul mate is missing and cannot be sensed in any way shape or form. She grows more and more recluse and inward, and I begin to fear for her sanity. I also fear for these mortals that walk the earth, for Illyana had secreted me with bits and pieces of her dreams long before her ascension that spoke of a giant cataclysm befalling the earth. I feel it grows near.
Aine has called and asked to meet for dinner. A very human tradition of catching up. It makes me glad to see she is still within the world and working her way around and becoming a part of it. I will meet with her, and reveal my dread. Perhaps it is time to gather the six and prepare for the worst. Whatever it may be.
